Sometimes I feel like a motherless child

Two great singers of the 20th century united by a great friendship: Marian Anderson and Victoria de los Ángeles. The second debuted in 1951 and the first would not do so until 1955, becoming the first black singer to sing there. Shortly afterwards they met at a gala broadcast on American television where Renata Tebaldi and Boris Christoff, among others, also participated. Victoria's admiration for Marian was absolute and she remembered "It was that time when black people had to stay in inns of bad death because they weren't allowed in hotels" and that's why the soprano invited her to a dinner at the Warldorf Astoria in New York as her companion, appearing the next day in the press with Margaret Truman, the daughter of the President of the United States. An important step in the revitalization of equal rights. "When he went out to Carnegie Hall, singing negro spirituals in the second half, it was something extraordinary," says Victoria in the book by Jaume Comelles. Perhaps inspired by Marian, Victoria recorded Sometimes I feel like a motherless child on an album called Songs of many lands together with her beloved Geoffrey Parsons. A long way from home...
