Another season draws to a close (and you get to read another little note from me)! I have to thank you for signing up to follow along, and for showing up at all the various performances this season. It would be lovely to get a chance to meet up next season in all the new places that await.
This Spring didn’t go quite as planned. I got seriously ill at the end of my recital tour and that resulted in me having to cancel my Easter concerts with the Berlin Phil in Salzburg. It was a bit of a blow to the ego–already at the first rehearsal, I began losing all the energy to sing or speak. But I was in awe of the way that everyone supported me at that moment. My collaborators' support helped me start to recover from some really terrible bronchitis.
Only a few days later, New York brought on allergies and genuine illness. It’s such a balancing act, and in those moments, I am truly reminded that perfection cannot exist because we all are navigating so much. With the kindness and support of others, we are able to achieve miraculous feats!
Now that I have rested and am recovered, I can start thinking about what the future holds.
Next season is about transition. It’s about stretching myself beyond the confines of what others think me capable of (and even what I myself have thought me capable of).
My career has never been built on an inner certainty that I MUST sing this or that role, but rather on the question: What would I learn from this role about myself and humanity? Would I be better for trying? Would I add a little more sweetness and color to the world? It’s with that in mind that I’m stepping into some new roles…Elettra in Idomeneo, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Antonia in The Tales of Hoffman. New women to meet and help me figure out more about myself and those around me. I hope you will join me on the journey.
In the meantime, let’s make sure to enjoy the Summer and soak up the sun while it’s there. Remember that goodness is a warmth that can heal deeply.
